Laundry Room Painting

ONE GALLON LATER…

Laundry Room Progress / 7th House on the Left

The laundry room has been painted! We’re having an extremely foggy morning here in Richmond, so the photos are all full of shadows and whatnot, so bear with me! Or Behr with me… haha… Okay, no.

As I mentioned last week in this post, we’ve been feeling the need to change up the blue walls in the laundry room in order to get to where we want to be style-wise. It’s a pretty good-sized room (for a laundry room) and it’s where we come in and out of the house everyday. That being the case, we ditched Artesian Well by Martha Stewart (even though we liked the color, it wasn’t what we wanted for this room) and went with Anonymous by Behr. It’s definitely darker, but this room gets a lot of natural light, so things balance out nicely. The white trim and doors with the moody gray makes for a perfect combination of light and dark that makes us giddy. Well, me giddy. Greg’s feeling more “happily accomplished” ; )

Like I said, there’s very little sunlight today, but there was about 15 seconds of sun, so I snapped this quick photo of what it looks like in the sunlight. We love, love, love the new color! I’m not sure it translates this way in photos, but in person, it really doesn’t even look like the same house. It looks a lot more classy and “grown up”. That said, just because the paint color is grown up doesn’t mean we’re not going to add some fun quirky touches here and there in the future.

We also ended up painting the half bath the same color…

It’s so hard to get a good photo in such a small space!Β I love how the new wall color really brings out the veins in the countertop and makes the vanity really pop. We’re going to lighten things up with a white-framed mirror (I’ve had my eye on one at Ballard for months and I think it will look great in here), and we have some really colorful wall art waiting in the wings to go above the toilet.

We also did something a little spontaneous… On his way home from work on Friday, Greg stopped by Home Depot to pick up a gallon of paint for our weekend project. While he was standing in the paint section, he called me to make sure he was getting the right finish. While we were talking, I noticed a commercial on TV where the interior side of the exterior doors were painted black. I remember seeing it on Pinterest here and there and I suddenly thought, “Why not?!” I immediately asked Greg to add a quart of black paint to his list.

…and we love it. Greg picked out Behr’s Black Suede (in satin finish). It’s a great shade of black and doesn’t have any weird blue or red undertones. We’re even thinking about painting the door in the living room (next to the fire place) and maybe even the front door. But we’ll make that decision when we get around to decorating those areas of the house a little more.

We unknowingly ran out of painter’s tape on our last project, so when it came time to paint the door, I used paper tape to tape off the window, haha. I wouldn’t recommend using it on large projects (that would be a lot of paper tape!), but it works in a pinch on small projects.

And here’s a fun before and after photo…

Totally different, right?!

Fortunately, Greg is a master cutter-inner. Seriously–he can paint a straight line without painter’s tape like nobody’s business. So I left the cutting-in to him, did a little online Christmas shopping, and joined in when it was time to paint the walls.

A day or two of having the kitchen and laundry room out of sorts was well worth it in the end. Just for fun, let’s look at what the laundry room looked like back in the day. Here’s what it looked like when we closed on the house…

A few weeks later, we painted the walls…

About a year later, we replaced the tile with hardwood floors and widened the closet door for more optimal storage (best decision ever)…

And now, with the new paint color…

It’s come a long way, but we still have a ways to go until we can call it “done” – or “done done” as Greg says, haha. With the new paint color, my head is already swirling with ideas, and I can’t wait to get started decorating it after the holidays. It’s amazing how much inspiration can come with just one gallon of paint. Not bad for about $30 of paint!

Love love love the new paint color and black door – that was an amazing idea! I once watched an episode of Sarah’s house where she put a framed piece of art on hinges to cover a fuse panel and it was one of the most awesome “disguises” I’ve ever seen. Ours is in the garage, so I’m sad I can’t use it! lol
PS – M-ville love to you!

Both paint colors look great (I preferred the blue, but I’m sure the change is fun). The black door looks super good!

Wow it looks great! The side by side before and after really show how just a coat of paint can totally change a room. It still feels light and bright but it looks so sophisticated! I also love the black door it works so well with your new color.

Thanks! It’s red oak stained with Minwax’s Dark Walnut. We also had our floor guy “water pop” it to bring out the grain more.

You nailed it! I, too, could live happily in a house filled with gray. My kitchen is currently painted Storm by Valspar, but in my last house I was madly in love with Adagio. It’s the perfect slate blue/gray. See, I’m a blue/gray girl. Look at me – I could go on & on about paint color!

Great job on the laundry room. I’m sticking around to see the finishing touches.

Looks great! So classy! And I can’t help but think how the black door will cut down on handprints and smudges. Love it! Will be pinning as soon as I get to my laptop (instead of iPhone).

How is the door holding up??? Any peeling?? Love the door color. About ready to start painting all my interior doors so I wanted to check if the paint held.

Looks amazing! Great colour choice…..always good to listen to those little voices in your head! Just curious as to what finish you use on the walls? And yes it’s great having Sarah here in Canada…..she is much taller than you might think IRL.

Thanks! We went with a flat finish. The previous blue paint was satin and it often had a glare, so we opted for flat this time around.

Love it! I liked the blue, but think the grey looks amazing!! We have so much to do in our laundry room, but we just moved in at the end of July and got married in October. Although, maybe our bedroom will be the next step… I hate painting… Love the difference it makes, but hate doing it.

    Hi,
I’m thinking about using Behr’s Anonymous too! In your photos it appears to have a strong blue undertone. In real light and to the eye, do you see this? The sample I painted on my falls appears to have a more brown/mauve undertone!

Hi there! I think the blue undertone is just coming out in the photos. In person, it has more of a brown undertone. Overall, we love the color and are very happy with it. Happy painting!
