Inspiration Odds + Ends

THE DREAM HOUSE IN THE WOODS

Before we get to dreaming about our dream house… We thought we were dreaming when we got the email from Jackson Design & Remodeling telling us that we won the Best Remodeling Blog Award!!!! We were seriously floored because there for a while, the race was really tight (even down to the .1%!) and we’ve seen voting like this take a turn at the last minute. So, once voting closed this past Friday, we had no idea what to expect. We couldn’t have done it without you all! We seriously appreciate you taking the time to vote for us. Thank you!!

While we love, love, love our house – even though there’s still much to do and decorate! – deep down, we know this isn’t our “forever house”. We’re not planning to anytime soon, but one day it will be time to move on. Once we’re ready for a change in pace, we’d love to buy a large piece of land with lots and lots of trees and build a house.

With Greg’s line of work and the fact I do freelance work over the World Wide Web, we could move pretty much anywhere. We love the idea of Charlottesville (it’s so gorgeous in the fall) or maybe even Nashville (we’re both fans of Tennessee since that’s where we went to college) and we’ve already talked about our love for California life (ahhh, California) – or we might just end up right down the road in Manakin-Sabot. Who knows! Wherever we end up, Greg wants to be “out in the middle of nowhere”, but I, on the other hand, must be close to a Target. If the powers that be want to be really awesome, a Whole Foods would be nice too… and a Crate & Barrel.

Even though this next chapter will start probably years from now, we’re already daydreaming about the house we want to build. We don’t want anything huge or extravagant that would be hard to maintain, but we have a handful of “wants” at the top of our list, including 10-foot ceilings, lots of natural light, a basement, and (I know this might sound crazy) I really want one of those “tornado rooms”, haha. Dorothy I am not.

Dream House in the Woods / 7th House on the Left

A few weeks ago, I started a Pinterest board called “Dream House in the Woods”. It’s where I collect our inspiration and ideas for our forever house. There aren’t too many photos pinned just yet, but that’s because I’m super picky about what I pin there. It’s like my protected, super-serious lock box of our ideas for our dream house. I thought it would be good to start collecting this stuff so when we do get to the point in our lives, we have a nice collection of thoughtful photos to refer to for inspiration – rather than it taking over a year to make decisions… like we’re doing with this house, haha.

From looking over the few photos I’ve pinned already, it’s quite noticeable that we like a lot of crisp, clean white and tons of windows – something we definitely wish we had more of in this house. There’s also a pretty dominate theme of texture including white-washed brick, planks, and subway tile. Ahhh, I love every bit of it.

So, how about you guys… What’s your daydreaming style? Pinterest? Scrapbook? Cork board? All of the above?

As for our weekend plans, we have a few small DIY projects up our sleeves that I’m excited to cross off the “I really want to try that list”. I also wanted to pressure-wash the carport and patio area to get rid of the cloud of yellow that possesses everything in sight. But, as it is every year around this time in Virginia, it will be yellow again within about five hours – or less. Oh, the joys of Pollen Season.

Just found your blog yesterday and I love it. My husband and I are DIY’ers and my husband never thought our house was our forever house 24 yrs ago! LOL. We will move someday to a home with a first floor master. Not necessarily because I don’t like stairs, but because I want to be able to close off the upstairs when it is just him and I. That way I only really need to clean downstairs. (ahh ulterior motives). My favorite way to collect ideas in in a binder with things I tear out of magazines. I am just starting to use Pintrest which is fun, but I think I am still too tactile to let that be my only outlet.

You’re so right, Pinterest is fun but you can’t replace a good ‘ole binder!
So glad you found us! : )

Indiana has LAND, Crate & Barrel, Target, and Whole Foods all within five minutes of each other. I am a fan. Indianapolis is amazing and we have grown to love it so much due to the little town feeling and yet having a GIANT downtown that is almost the NUMBER one convention town in USA. Loads of things are happening here..

Congrats on the win you guys! Well deserved! After spending two weeks road-tripping through France last year, I would love to live in Provence. It’s a dream, but I love the French country style. Which is nothing like how my current house is decorated, but that style just wouldn’t work with our house. I would love something with that rustic, but modern, charm. With an overflowing garden and a lot of stone work!

So I have been obsessing over you guys for awhile and this is my first comment! I need to express my love for you both…but in a non threatening and creepy kind of way 😉 My husband and I are planning on building next year and we have pinned a lot of the same things you have above so I would say we both have some amazing style sense going on.

P.S. My husband openly follows your blog and really appreciates that other men, like your husband, enjoy all things home design like he does! We will keep following 🙂

I totally see where you’re coming from with this. I’m super excited for one day to have a lovely home that I can renovate and make it my style. I absolutely love your blog and I found it last week. I’m just a 16 year old living in New York City and dreaming of my future home. But I mainly read home decor blogs because I would like to be an interior Designer and I get loads of ideas from blogs. I’m truly diggin’ your dream home plans. I also have a Pinterest which I totally prefer in order to save ideas and other things of that sort. You can follow me at
PAOLA ARLETTY and it would mean a lot. I have loads of boards and pins of the things I love. My favorite is the board titled “Classic” which is my go to design style! You might find great inspiration for your dream home there because I pinned loads of classic, crisp, clean looks for the home!
    Thanks!

    Hi there,

There’s an app you should get called Houzz, it’s basically home-design-porn. It’s sorta like Pinterest in that you can create different ideabooks for different things & save pics to them. The photos are posted by architects & designers amongst others & you can ask them questions if you need to know anything about their work. It’s pretty awesome & has nearly 1.5 million photos on it 🙂

      Hello.
I have heard of that amazing app and site, I’m kind of obsessed with it. It’s really cool! And I love how one can search for anything and everything.
      Thanks 🙂

I’m definitely a modern rustic kinda gal. I’m not good at putting things together. I’m always wanting to play it safe. I get so frustrated with myself. My best bet is to find a picture of a room I like and try to recreate it. I like clean lines, warm colors, a little “lived in” look, modern artwork reclaimed woods and uncluttered spaces. That’s rustic modern, right? Oh, well, if it’s not, I’ll have to come up with a new name for it:) Congrats on winning your contest! Even if you hadn’t you’d still be a winner in my book! Love your blog. I only wish you posted everyday!

let me tell you … i’ve been buying home magazines since college, and once a year would go through and tear out all of the things that i loved and put them in a binder. about three years ago, we fell in love with a piece of land and decided to build. i went through my binder – as well as folders of pix i’d saved from online … and pinterest – and culled down to my very favorites. then i looked to see what the common thread was, and that was what led every step of the design process. as we met with the architect and the various design centers to pick things out, the process was quick and painless because i knew exactly what i wanted. every single person along the way told us what a joy and breath of fresh air our house was, because it was so DIFFERENT than the standard build, and because we knew what we wanted so there was no hand-holding, and there were no delays in choosing things. having those pictures ahead of time and finding our style and knowing what it was that we liked (also lots of white, and lots of windows. i wanted an old farmhouse, my husband wanted a new house, so we built an old-looking “farmhouse.”) made the entire process painless. you are absolutely doing the right thing, and i firmly believe that if you know where you want to go, you will get there. the universe will bring it to you. we made the best of the houses we lived in before building, but they were never “our” house. this one is … every inch of it. keeping my fingers crossed that the “someday house” isn’t too far away!!

This made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, haha! So happy to know this process worked well for someone else… and that I’m not crazy for “daydreaming” already, haha. Thanks so much!

Haha! : ) We have a few floor plans saved in our “files” but haven’t decided on “the one” yet. Though, all of them are 1-story (with a basement) and 3 or 4 bedrooms. But obviously nothing is set in stone ; )

As a native Californian who has since moved away, there are no real estate deals to be made there. Houses and land are super overpriced – not much free space to build either unless you are in central ca. TN or Charlottesville are the better picks in my book – but of course that is just my opinion. Love your blog 😉

Yeah, while we love, love, love visiting California (often!), we’re most likely not going to actually move there. Just daydreaming I guess, haha.
