Happy Weekend

Greetings from the West Coast! Hey mom, go open the door… I’m here!

Yes, I actually just really surprised my mom. Without her knowing, I flew into LA tonight (Thursday night LA time, freakishly early Friday Virginia time) to surprise her! I called from the elevator and asked her to check out the latest post really quick and tell me what she thought. We’ll get back to all of that in a second, but technically, I’m writing this post on the plane and going to post it when I pull into the parking garage of the apartment. Sneaky, sneaky!

Tonight, I arrived here in lovely Los Angels. As some of you may already know, my mom and brother are temporarily living out here while my brother, Abram, pursues a career in the music industry (more on that and an update in this post). My dad owns an access control business in Richmond, so he’s busy bringing home the bacon, holding down the East Coast fort and helping Greg and me on our house projects, haha. Seriously, I have no idea what we’d do without my dad’s handy know-how. Yeah, our family’s current living situation is unconventional to say the least, but, we’re making it work – even though I’m sure some people think we’re crazy. That’s how we roll.

Since I haven’t seen my mom or brother since Greg’s and my trip out here back in January, it was high time for a visit. My brother and I decided to surprise our mom with a visit from her favorite (and only) daughter. As I mentioned earlier, she had no idea I was flying in and didn’t find out until reading this post. Needless to say, I’m sure she’ll be one confused, ultra happy and super tearful mom. You can’t get anything past our mom. She’s a mom! But I think the cute pictures I sent her through out the day of Bentley and the project we were “currently” working on sealed the deal. Okay, and yeah, I may have called her from the bathroom at the Atlanta airport and told her I was in Target, haha.

Greg couldn’t make the trip with me because of his nine to five, so he’s home taking care of Bentley and the house while I’m away. I’m going to miss them so, so much and Greg is definitely going to miss being in California… and Sprinkles… and me, of course. Seriously though, if Greg and I didn’t have an attachment to the East coast and didn’t enjoy having all four seasons so much – okay, and if I wasn’t afraid of earthquakes – we’d move here in a second. We both have a head over heals kind of love for LA and it’s turned into kind of like a second home to us. And boy, it doesn’t hurt having a guest room ready for us at Mom’s and Abram’s apartment in downtown Burbank whenever we can make the trip, haha.

Greg and I will still be blogging while I’m here on the West Coast. On Monday, be on the look out for an ultra fab giveaway that I’m certain you guys are going to love. Also, we’ll be sharing the after photos from the carport turned covered patio project. Woo hoo!! We were able to snap the photos this morning before I caught my flight and we can’t wait to share them with you all.

In the mean time, anyone have any favorite LA spots to share? Your Porto’s, Urth CafΓ©, and Umami Burger recommendations during our last trip were spot on. β€˜Lette is still on my list of things to do. I’m excited to (finally) try out these little gems that I keep hearing from you about. Happy weekend, everyone!

SO, my mom and little brother moved out to LA to pursue his singing/acting career. My dad, my husband, and I all live back here on the East coast while my dad ‘brings home the bacon’ and my husband and I remodel our home. (my other two younger brothers live in the LA area as well–one just launched his own sunglass company and the other is working on becoming a producer).

I understand the unconventional lifestyle you talk about! πŸ™‚ Isn’t it cool that our parents support our brother’s dreams?! (…and ours too!)

Have fun! If you haven’t checked it out on one of your previous trips, the Melrose Trading Post flea market is every Sunday and one of my favorites. There’s lots of great finds big and small, but it’s smaller and for me less overwhelming than somewhere like the Rose Bowl. Father’s Office (locations in Santa Monica and Culver City) is my favorite burger in LA but gets super crowded so go at an off time, and the Culver City location is in the same Helms complex as tons of great (mostly out of my price range but fun to browse) home places like Rejuvenation, Room & Board, HD Buttercup, etc. Actually now that I think of it Father’s Office may be 21+, but La Dijonaise in the same complex is great cute french food to fortify you for furniture shopping. Anywhere in Downtown Culver City for food πŸ™‚ I should probably get back to work instead of sharing all my LA tips…
