A graphic designer who loves decorating and a web developer learning his way around power tools, we are Greg and Ashley Brown and welcome to our “house”, 7th House on the Left! This is where we talk about renovating, decorating and living in our firs home – a 1970’s brick ranch in Hanover, Virginia. And yes, it just so happens to be the seventh house on the left (well, technically it’s the 7th mailbox/house number on the left, but whatever).
This isn’t a DIY blog. We’re more of what you’d call a “Semi-DIY Blog”. We’re both super busy people and as much as we’d love to build our own furniture and install our own kitchen cabinets, there just aren’t enough hours in the day. We’re all about finding the right balance of when to hire a pro, when to get in there and get our hands dirty and putting a special “DIY-touch” on ready-made pieces. If you’re looking for a tride and true DIY blog, check out our Blog Roll in our sidebar on the right. There, you’ll find a list of some ultra-talented DIY mavens.
Chances are, since you’re here on the “About” page, you’re wanting to learn more about us. So here we go…
I’m Greg and I’m 27 years old and a web developer – or in other words, I write code and make things work. When I’m not working the 9 to 5, I like to play guitar and a video game or two. I love math, physics, sci-fi movies and I enjoy recreational coding from time to time. Yep, I’m pretty much your all around, stereotypical geek. When it comes to our house renovations, I’m in the process of learning my way around the ins and outs of home ownership. When we bought the house, I didn’t even know the difference between satin and eggshell paint finishes. Nevertheless, I’m learning little by little and having fun doing it along the way. Mainly, I spend most of time time keeping Ash’s feet on the ground… like trying to convince her we don’t have to paint the laundry room… again.
I’m Ashley. I’m 28 and when I’m not working on projects around the house or on the blog, I take on occasional projects over at Ashley Brown Creative. We also have a small Etsy shop, Brown & Barkley where we sell our own line of art prints and other paper goods. Needless to say, things stay pretty busy around the Brown household. Even though I’m not a professional interior designer, I’ve been an enthusiast long before I even know what interior design was. I was that kid with the perfectly arranged Disney stuffed animals, alphabetized coloring books and the categorized and color-coded sticker book. I’m a lover of lists and constantly find myself jotting down ideas or sketching possible room layout in notebooks (hence our notebook blog design!). I also enjoy classic TV shows (particularly I Love Lucy) and curling up with Greg, Bentley, a blanket and a good black and white movie. You just can’t beat the classics.
Last, but certainly not least, there’s Bentley, our spunky 10-pound dog. Actually, he’s more like a part of the family than just a dog. He’s an energetic, 7-year-old Pomeranian and a handful, to say the least. Bentley’s crazy about peanut butter, his prized tennis ball (if you put it in a pile of 1,000 other tennis balls, he could still pick out his!) and has an odd obsession with wearing t-shirts and sweaters. Read more about Bentley and see him in action in this post.
We originally met at church and a few years later both graduated from Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Greg double-majored in Computer Information Systems and Business Administration while I double-majored in Advertising and Telecommunications and also earned an associates in Art Design. After graduation, we moved back to our homes here in Richmond, and in December 2007, became Mr. & Mrs. After cosy apartment living for almost three years, we decided we were ready to take the next big step: home ownership.
A few weeks before closing, we made the decision to start a blog about the demolition, renovation, decorating and everything else that comes along with remodeling and living in our first house. After all, we were a web developer and graphic designer so blogging just seemed to be a natural fit for us. So here we are!
We’re so thankful for you stopping by our blog and taking the the time to get to know us – and our little dog, too! If you have any questions for us, feel free to shoot us an email.
