7th House on the Left

Today we have a fun giveaway coming to you from Dana, an independent consultant for Scentsy. I first became aware of Scentsy when I was given one as a gift. I’m an avid candle lover, so I wasn’t too sure if I would warm up to the idea of a “flameless candle”. The specially formulated wax Scentsy Bars with the heat of a low-watt light bulb and fills the room with fragrance, just like a candle would. It’s safer than a traditional candle (no flame), there are tons of scent options to choose from, and you can switch the scents out without having to buy a whole new candle. Sure, if you’re a die hard candle-lover like I, it won’t replace the ambiance of a real candle, but it’s a perfect thing to have on all day to get the fragrant aroma of one (we have one in our laundry room that we keep on pretty much all day every day). In other words, we’re fans. Psst… find out how everyone can get a special 7th House discount near the end of the post.

So, yesterday. It finally happened. I had all four wisdom teeth pulled. I mentioned in this post that this was going down the week before Thanksgiving, but because we had to go out of town at the last minute, we had to postpone it to yesterday. It wasn’t that bad. Uncomfortable, sure, but not as bad as my head (and unneeded Google searches) tried to tell me it would be. Though I’m in pain and my face is swelling (fun stuff right there, folks), I’m so glad it’s over and behind me. On that note, on to the fun things…

Happy Weekend // 7thhouseontheleft.com

Later today, my little brother flies in from LA. Swollen face or not, I’m so excited to meet him at the airport and hug him really, really tight. Greg and I are so happy to have him home for a week or so before our entire family head to Florida for Christmas. He and Greg are having a boy’s night out tonight and going to the John Mayer concert here in Richmond. 6th row. Backstage access. So. Jealous. Okay, nah, not really. I have my dad babysitting me with pain meds and Downton Abby Season 3. Yep, he’s a good dad.

If you follow us on Instagram, you might have seen a few photos from my and Greg’s annual “Christmas Movie Night for Two” last night. Every year, we normally do this on Black Friday, but, again, since we ended up being out of town, we decided to push it back a bit.

Christmas Movie Night for Two // #mykindofholiday // 7thhouseontheleft.com

Our “Christmas Movie Night for Two” always consists of pajamas, all the lights off except for the Christmas lights, cozy quilts, all phones on “Do Not Disturb Mode”, our favorite Christmas-themed treats, popcorn and a few Christmas movies. This year, we watched Arthur Christmas (which, in our opinion, is the most underrated animated holiday film ever) and Holiday Inn (a pure classic). Our movie nights are always one of my favorite kinds of date nights but our “Christmas Movie Night for Two” is extra special and has always been our way of kicking off the Christmas season. That, and it gives us an excuse to eat popcorn and peanut butter M&Ms at the same time. Best. Combo. Ever.

To make this weekend extra special, our pals at Target are giving one of you guys a $25 gift card so you can have your own Christmas movie night and maybe even give the new Target Ticket a whirl. You can enter with the widget below or post a photo on Instagram of your favorite holiday activity using the hashtag #mykindofholiday and tagging us in the description so we’ll be sure to see it (@7thhouseblog). This is a special weekend “Flash Giveaway”, so it will run over the weekend and close Monday evening. Happy weekend and good luck, everyone!

I’ve always been mesmerized by and marginally jealous of people who can reupholster furniture. It’s just something I’ve always been intimidated by and completely apprehensive to tackle. Where do you begin? What type of fabric are you supposed to use? Are there certain pieces that can’t be reupholstered? One of my goals for this next year is to set aside my fears and actually reupholster a piece of furniture. Yep, I’m going to do it. Ya’ll hold me to it, okay? Okay.

Giveaway: Spruce: A Step-by-Step Guide to Upholstery and Design by Amanda Brown

Luckily, just in time for one of my 2014 goals, this amazing how-to book showed up on the horizon: Spruce: A Step-By-Step Guide to Upholstery and Design by Amanda Brown. It’s everything a totally inexperienced upholsterer like myself (or even an experienced one!), would want. So, when the publishers asked us to be a part of the virtual book tour, we emphatically agreed.

From cover to cover, the book is filled with information and everything you need to know about upholstering pretty much any type of furniture.

Giveaway: Spruce: A Step-by-Step Guide to Upholstery and Design by Amanda Brown

Being a graphic design geek, I’m totally crushing on the book’s layout and beautiful photography. I kind of want to describe it as “textbook-like”, because it’s that thorough. On the other hand, it’s way too interesting and fun to be compared to one. It also has three bookmark ribbons to mark your places while you’re working on a project. It’s easy to follow and much less intimidating than I’d imagine a book on upholstery could be.

Today, Storey Publishing is giving one of you guys on the other side of the screen a chance to win a copy of Spruce! Here’s how to enter… Scroll down to the giveaway widget below and log in with your Facebook account. If you’d rather not use your Facebook account, or don’t have one, just enter your email address (registering, adding a password, etc is not required and as always, your information is kept private!). Once you’ve done that, you’ll be shown the entry requirements set by yours truly. Click the “Do it!” button, type the phrase in the blank in the widget, then click “Enter!” Now that you’ve entered, you’ll see some optional entry options. To gain additional entries and increase your chances of winning the prize, you can do one or all of them – or none, it’s up to you. If you already follow Spruce or 7th House, go ahead and enter your Facebook or Twitter info, and you’ll be automatically given the extra entries. This giveaway is open to those in the US only, and as usual, the winner will be chosen using Random.org. Good luck everyone!
